The hospitality sector was selected as the focus of this water efficiency project, as it is an important mainstay of the economy in the South East. In East Sussex in particular it employs about a third of those in work and it is forecast to continue to have high employment growth and high gross value added (GVA) contribution. Within this sector three SME hotels that covered a range of sizes and facilities were chosen as water saving champions. As water demands in a hotel are generally required on a 24 hour basis, 7 days a week, this presents a real challenge in effective water management, particularly as those using the hotel facilities will often regard it as a treat or luxury. Therefore the sector has a high environmental impact on both water and energy use in the region. Overall the project has achieved it's aims and has identified a fantastic 4,095m3 of water equivalent to 4,095,000 litres of water, to be saved over the forthcoming year with cost savings of £9,675 per annum. Based upon profit margins of 10% this would equate to the three business increasing turnover by £96,750 per annum. Water efficient equipment has been installed to achieve these savings over the forthcoming year and the companies will be given ongoing support to monitor these saving through the East Sussex betre programme.
